Childcare Volunteer
Job Description

Childcare volunteers at the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery work hand in hand with Nursery staff. Together they provide a safe, nurturing and happy environment for children birth through age 6.  When the Nursery has a volunteer on-site, it can increase it’s capacity to accept two additional children.

 

Reports to: Assistant Director

 

In order to become a volunteer, one must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Submit to fingerprinting and pass background check

  • Provide proof of physical examination and TB test

  • Hold high school diploma or GED

  • Be open to suggestion regarding techniques for working with children

  • Posses an understanding and respect for children

  • Meet all DCFS requirements

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Engage in age appropriate activities with children during the shift (i.e. dress up, bubbles, blocks, art)

  • Caring for the physical needs of children

  • Feeding, dressing and preparing children for naps/bedtime

  • Maintaining confidentiality

  • Abide by mandated reporter status

 

Hours:

Due to the fact that the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, scheduling is flexible.  Volunteers are encouraged to make a monthly or quarterly commitment to volunteer scheduled hours to assist the Nursery with scheduling and capacity.  Assistance is MOST needed during the meal time and nap hours during each day of the week, approximately: 

  • 6:30 am - 8:00 am

  • 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

  • 4:30 pm - 6:00 pm

Event Volunteer
Job Description

Event volunteers work closely with the Family Support Specialist and administrative staff to ensure that Nursery events run efficiently and smoothly. This may include set up and tear down of activities, supervision of guests and managing activities. Examples of such events include holiday parties, parades, family activity nights and fundraisers. 

 

Reports to: Family Support Specialist

 

In order to become a volunteer, one must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Submit to fingerprinting and pass background check

  • Provide proof of physical examination and TB test

  • Hold high school diploma or GED

  • Be open to suggestion regarding techniques for working with children

  • Posses an understanding and respect for children

  • Meet all DCFS requirements

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting the Family Support Specialist by preparing age appropriate activities for children at family events

  • Actively participate in activities as requested by staff, keeping the mission of the Nursery in mind

 

Hours:

Due to the fact that the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery is open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, there are no set hours. Scheduling is flexible.

Donations Volunteer
Job Description

A large variety of donations are received daily at the Mini O'Beirne Crisis Nursery. Items are examined for cleanliness, safety and necessity at the Nursery. If items cannot be used at the Nursery, they are processed to be passed along to clients who can put them to good use. 

 

Reports to: Assistant Director

 

In order to become a volunteer, one must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age

  • Submit to fingerprinting and pass background check

  • Provide proof of physical examination and TB test

  • Hold high school diploma or GED

  • Be open to suggestion regarding techniques for working with children

  • Posses an understanding and respect for children

  • Meet all DCFS requirements

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Sort incoming donations and estimate value of donated items

  • Document all incoming donations

  • Evaluate needs at the Nursery and select items to retain

  • Marking any packaged products with expiration date

  • Reviewing recall lists for donated items

 

Hours:

Due to the fact that the Mini O’Beirne Crisis Nursery is open 24 hours per day, 365 days

per year, there are no set shifts. Scheduling is flexible.
